Ballast Point Park- Walama
The 2.5 hectares of foreshore land, formerly an industrial site for Caltex, underwent a renewal project to provide green picnic spots with walking paths, access for cyclists and panoramic views of the city and Harbour Bridge. The Park is owned and managed by Property NSW.
The site's history has been brought to life through design, art and poetry. For instance, the Tank 101 structure was installed to symbolise the site and working harbour history. An artwork named Delicate Balance was also installed to represent the use of sandstone from the site as a ballast for European ships. Ballast Point Park includes a children's play area, barbecues and amenities, and is open to the public from sunrise to sunset daily. It is an on-leash area for dogs. The Park is located at the end of Ballast Point Road, Birchgrove, on the Balmain peninsula and is accessible by bus and ferry. There are also a small number of car spaces at the park. Access for people with disabilities is available from Wharf Road for the upper levels, and from Yeend Street for the foreshore promenade.
