The Goods Line
Property NSW developed and manages The Goods Line; a green public space which provides a traffic-free, accessible thoroughfare from Central Station to Darling Harbour. The Line is surrounded by some of Sydney's most important cultural, educational and media institutions, such as the ABC, UTS, TAFE and the Museum of Applied Arts & Sciences (Powerhouse).
The Goods Line connects more than 80,000 tertiary students, locals and visitors to the many major attractions of Sydney’s much loved Darling Harbour.
Visitors can picnic at the dining tables or bask in the sunshine in the green, grassy spaces. There are table tennis tables, study pods amongst the trees, and a children’s water play area with a sand pit shaded by fig trees. It’s the perfect place to take a break in the middle of the busy city and just enjoy the tranquil surrounds.
The Goods Line is also a new public space for pop-up events, invigorating and bringing new activity into the precinct. For example, the amphitheatre at the Mary Ann Street stairs offers an opportunity for outdoor movies and performances.
The Goods Line has been compared to New York's famous High Line, reclaiming a disused rail corridor - including a heritage rail bridge over Ultimo Road - and returning it to public use as a vibrant, elevated pedestrian walkaway and cycle path.
The Goods Line has received many accolades for urban and green design, including the 2016 AILA NSW Awards Civic Landscape Award of Excellence and the 2020 Vision Green Design Award 2016. It is currently nominated in the Landscape category of the World Architecture Festival and the Rosa Barba International Landscape Prize.
To reach The Goods Line from Central Station take the Devonshire Street Tunnel and follow the signs for UTS. Pass beneath George Street and continue to Ultimo Road.
